Wedding Dresses That Heal

As a twenty-something bride-to-be myself, I can't even begin to imagine how special a wedding day is for a woman (and her groom) who's already battled breast cancer at such a young age.

I just came across this article from Madison, Wisconsin's Capital Times, which highlights an upcoming bridal show in Milwaukee, where a special "Dresses That Heal" fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation (BCRF). The event will feature a silent auction of donated wedding apparel and accessories, including three designer bridal gowns, from Judd Waddell, L'ezu Atelier and Amy Michelson, that retail between $2,300 and $4,000 each.

In addition, a Madison bridal shop, Vera's House of Bridals, has created garters embellished with pink ribbons that promote breast cancer awareness.

"It's the bridal equivalent of cause-related bracelets," Rivard (bridal shop consultant) says.

The garters will be handcrafted by breast cancer survivors and BCRF volunteers, and they'll sell for $15 at the bridal shows/

"For me, weddings represent a new beginning, and that's what cancer survivors experience after treatment," Rivard says.

What a great idea! Hopefully, the shop will be able to take orders for those over the phone or web as well.

'One Tree Hill' Soundtrack CD to Benefit Breast Cancer

The popular WB teen focused series is releasing its second soundtrack of pop music on February 7, 2006, titled "Friends With Benefit".

For the first time in television history, a storyline on a TV series will result in a soundtrack album. After inhabitants of Tree Hill are stricken by cancer, their friends and neighbors stage a concert and create a modern-rock compilation album to raise money to fight the disease. This season on "One Tree Hill," Peyton Sawyer (series regular Hilarie Burton) began to build a relationship with her birth mother Ellie (guest star Sheryl Lee), who recently reappeared in her life and revealed she was battling breast cancer.

That album, on the show and in real life, is One Tree Hill, Vol.2-and a substantial portion of its proceeds will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Association, which is excited about the opportunity to raise awareness about early detection and target the show's core demographic - young women.

Breast Cancer Widower = St. Valentine?

That's what you may think about the grieving millionaire Henri Zimand, who lived a cinderella love story with wife Anda, who died of breast cancer, has dedicated his life to creating awareness of the importance of love and cure breast cancer.

For Valentines Day 2005, Zimand, offered New Yorkers 500 free carriage rides in Central Park and gave the winner (NYPD cop John Briano and wife Kathleen) of the love letter contest a first class trip to Monte Carlo. In 2006, Zimand challenges New Yorkers and the world to get romantic -- particularly on Valentine's Day, which is less than 30 days away. This year he is upping the ante, offering 1000 romantic carriage rides in New York City and opening the love letter competition to the world. 15 romantic couples will be flown to New York and all finalists will be eligible to win prizes ranging from trips, iPods to jewelry.

The millionaire widower Zimand is personally paying for the entire promotion, a non-commercial venture. Every year he and his wife came to New York for Valentine's Day and took a romantic horse and carriage ride in Central Park. "My hope is to spread the word of how enduring love and support can get you through the hardest times. Love is the most important thing in life," stated Zimand and "Valentine's Day is the day to express your love."

Zimand's generosity does not end with the contest winners -- for each of the first 10,000 letters received, a donation will be made in Anda's name to a cancer research or treatment facility in the area in which the letter was written.

Drinking Coffee May Reduce Breast Cander Risk!

Yes! Finally, some validation for me to continue drinking as much coffee as I do daily. (i'm an addict.)
On average, I used to have 4 to 5 cups of coffee a day, but lately, I have been reducing it to around 3 or so, just because I've been worried about some other health issues from drinking that much daily.

But according to a new study released in the January 2006 issue of International Journal of Cancer, led by Dr. Steven A. Narod, of the University of Toronto, Ontario, and colleagues, found these results:

The risk of breast cancer among those who drank 1 to 3 cups of coffee daily, 4 or 5 cups, or 6 or more cups was reduced by 10 percent, 25 percent and 69 percent, respectively, compared with those who did not drink coffee.

Drinking coffee was particularly protective against breast cancer among those with a BRCA1 mutation, but not those with a BRCA2 mutation.
