Support Breastfeeding to Help Prevent Breast Cancer
One of the best ways to help fight the battle against breast cancer is to give moms the information and support they need to lower their risks of getting the disease at all. That's where a new site called The Lactivist aims to make an impact.
The Lactivist aims to educate people about the benefits of extended breastfeeding and human milk banking with an informational blog and a CafePress store that sells breastfeeding advocacy clothing. Numerous studies have shown that breastfeeding not only carries long-term health benefits for children, but can also have an imapct on the health of a breastfeeding mother. Studies have shown that breastfeeding reduces risks for diabetes and that extended breastfeeding can reduce a mother's risk of developing breast cancer.
Jennifer Laycock, who runs The Lactivist is a breastfeeding advocate that turned to exclusively pumping when she was unable to establish a solid nursing relationship with her newborn daughter. Laycock expressed milk and bottle fed her daughter for more than a year while donating her excess break milk to the human milk bank located in Columbus, Ohio.
The Lactivist store sells clothing that carry breastfeeding advocacy slogans like "fresh milk served here" and "Eat at Mom's. Other shirts with cute and irreverent slogans are designed to promote extended breastfeeding, breastfeeding in public, child led weaning and human milk bank donation. Laycock donates 100% of all profits from milk bank shirts to the Mother's Milk Bank of Ohio.
